Why a proper outdoor socket beats a lead through the window

Trailing an extension lead out through a window for the mower or the pressure washer is one of those habits that works right up until it doesn’t. Indoor leads aren’t built for wet ground, the open window kills your draught-proofing, and the lead is a trip hazard across the path. An outdoor socket is a small job that makes the garden genuinely usable: power for tools, lighting, a water feature, or a hot tub, without anything run through the house.

Weatherproofing and RCD protection

Outdoor sockets have to cope with rain, frost, and damp in a way indoor ones never do. We fit properly IP-rated weatherproof units with sprung covers, on outdoor-rated cable with correct glands so water can’t track into the terminals.

Every outdoor socket circuit gets RCD protection, which is both a requirement and a sensible safeguard: anything used outdoors is more exposed to damp and damage, and the RCD is what disconnects the supply fast if a fault develops. This is the detail that keeps an outdoor socket safe for years rather than becoming the thing that trips the house.

Powering hot tubs, tools, and water features

Different outdoor loads need different treatment. A hot tub, for instance, often needs its own dedicated circuit and an isolator rather than a general-purpose socket, because of the sustained load it draws. Garden tools, a pond pump, or festoon lighting are usually fine from a standard weatherproof socket.

Where you want the socket determines the neatest route. The simplest installs go straight through the wall from a circuit just inside. For a socket further down the garden, or several, we plan a proper buried armoured run so there’s nothing to mow over or trip on.
