Weatherproof outdoor sockets and lighting on an outbuilding

What's included

  • Dedicated steel-wire-armoured supply from the house
  • Sub-consumer unit in the outbuilding where needed
  • Sockets, lighting, and heating circuits
  • Trenching and cable routing planned and tidy
  • Garden offices wired for work, with data where wanted
  • Tested and certificated for safe year-round use

Who it's for

Homeowners building a garden office, anyone converting a shed or garage into a workshop or gym, people working from home who need a proper supply, and those adding heating or a kitchenette outside.

How it works

  1. Talk through what the building is for and the loads it needs
  2. Site visit to plan the supply, route, and consumer unit
  3. Install: armoured supply, board, circuits, and accessories
  4. Test, certificate, and demonstrate

What outbuilding power really needs

A garden office, a workshop, a home gym, or a garage that’s become a proper workspace: outbuildings increasingly need real power, not a single bulb on an extension lead from the house. We supply and wire garden rooms, sheds, and garages across Kent, with a dedicated supply sized for what the building actually does.

Running an outbuilding off a domestic extension lead is unsafe and unreliable: the lead isn’t rated for a permanent buried run, there’s no proper protection, and it trips or overheats the moment you plug in a heater and a kettle together. A proper installation fixes all of that.

A dedicated armoured supply

The right way to power an outbuilding is a dedicated steel-wire-armoured (SWA) cable run from the house, sized for the load and buried or routed to standard. Armoured cable is built to survive being underground and resists damage from spades, mowers, and rodents in a way ordinary cable does not.

We calculate the cable size for the distance and the load, so the supply doesn’t suffer voltage drop over a long run and has headroom for what you want to plug in. The trenching and routing are planned with you and kept as tidy as the garden allows.

Its own consumer unit

For anything beyond the most basic supply, the outbuilding gets its own small consumer unit. That gives you local isolation and protection: sockets, lighting, and any heating each on their own protected circuit, with RCD protection throughout.

It means you can switch the whole building off at its own board, and a fault in the outbuilding stays in the outbuilding rather than tripping the house. Where the work is notifiable, we handle the certification and notify building control as required.

Garden offices and workshops

A garden office has its own needs: enough sockets for a desk setup, good lighting that’s comfortable to work under, heating for winter, and often a data cable run alongside the power so the broadband reaches reliably. A workshop leans more towards heavier-duty sockets and good task lighting.

We wire the building for how you’ll actually use it, and we’re happy to plan in capacity for things you might add later, like a charger or a small kitchenette.

How we wire an outbuilding

We start by talking through what the building is for and the loads it needs, then visit to plan the supply, route, and consumer unit. We install the armoured supply, the board, and the circuits and accessories, then test, certificate, and demonstrate the finished installation.

It’s all quoted up front after the site visit, so you know the cost before any digging starts.

Frequently asked questions

How is a garden room powered?

With a dedicated steel-wire-armoured cable run from the house, sized for the load and the distance, usually feeding the building's own small consumer unit. Armoured cable is built to survive being buried and resists damage from spades and rodents.

Does an outbuilding need its own fuse board?

For anything beyond the most basic supply, yes. Its own consumer unit gives local isolation and protection, keeps each circuit RCD-protected, and means a fault in the outbuilding doesn't trip the house. Where the work is notifiable we handle the certification.

Can you wire a garden office for working from home?

Yes. We fit enough sockets for a desk setup, comfortable lighting, heating for winter, and a data run alongside the power where you want reliable broadband, and we can build in capacity for things you add later.
